Last year LEGO revealed that they would introduce more sustainability measures into their products in the form of paper bags.

They were investing upto $400 million to up their sustainability efforts by phasing out the many plastic bags found in each of their sets. After successful trials, which saw Adults and Children both agreeing that the new paper bags were indeed environmentally friendly and easier to open, LEGO have revealed via their recent Financial Results, they will start supplying paper bags early next year (2022), with a 100% sustainability result by 2025!

Also announced today, and staying on the sustainability topic, LEGO Classic Baseplates will being changing over to the new paper packaging.

That’s now the only thing that’s changing, their product numbers are being updated too. So if you see them online as being discontinued please don’t panic they have simply moved.

The LEGO Classic Baseplates will be exactly the same as before, it is simply the packaging that is changing, which should happen March 2022.

The changes are:

  • Green Baseplate 10700 to 11023
  • Gray Baseplate 10701 to 11024
  • Blue Baseplate 10714 to 11025
  • White Baseplate 11010 to 11026

Official statement:

Over the next few months you will likely see some products with “retiring soon” branding or perhaps a local retailer reporting that they are no longer able to order certain products. We want to share ahead of time that there is no need to be alarmed about baseplates.

In 2022, baseplates will be changing from their current plastic packaging to more sustainable paper packaging. Besides packaging, there are no additional changes with the LEGO baseplates and you will still be able to get the same colors and sizes in 2022 that you can purchase today. You can expect to see the new packaging around March 1, 2022.
