The list of LEGO Ideas submissions that have made it through to the next review stage keeps growing, with the latest one recreating the classic Japanese cartoon out of bricks, My Neighbour Totoro!

The fan designer, TrumanBricks, is back with another great design, this time bringing the main characters My Neighbour Totoro to life. The project has made it through to the next Review Stage by hitting the required 10,000 supporters mark. The design could be chosen by the powers that be and turned into a real LEGO set.

Not knowing a lot about the subject matter I had to do a deep dive on the Japanese animation. The project is based on My Neighbor Totoro, a 1988 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and animated by Studio Ghibli for Tokuma Shoten. It stars the voices of Noriko HidakaChika Sakamoto and Hitoshi Takagi, and focuses on two young sisters and their interactions with friendly woodland spirits in postwar rural Japan. This makes for a great base for a LEGO set as the character, lore and fan base is huge. The main part of the build is the Catbus, a fictional character that is a large, grinning, twelve-legged cat with a bushy tail and a hollow body that serves as a bus, with windows and seats covered with fur.

TrumanBricks has done a wonderful job in capturing the characters, the Catbus, and the story telling behind it all. Fans of both the film and LEGO would love to get their hands on this set if it were real. Unfortunately reaching the required goal of 10,000 supporters doesn’t guarantee it’ll be made into a real-life LEGO set, but there is hope for fans as the LEGO Ideas team will debate on and choose which sets will be lucky enough to make it through sometime next year – we wish TrumanBricks the best of luck in the next stage.
