Barweer Xbert Piranha Plant (66120) Review

Before I got into Teaching and LEGO collecting, I was an avid Musical Theatre fan and performed in many shows throughout my childhood and went on to study Theatre at University. One show I never got to perform in was Little Shop of Horrors, a comedy horror musical about a blood thirsty alien who resembles a giant carnivorous plant. So when Barweer offered me the Xbert Piranha Plant (which is strikingly familiar to Audrey 2 in the show) to build and review, it took me a little step closer to fulfilling the dream of performing in the show, but I guess in brick form?

Before we start the review, lets talk about Barweer. Now on to todays set! The Xbert 66120 Piranha Plant is a stunning little build. It comes with 838 pieces and two large stickers for the ‘Feed Me‘ sign, a great reference to one of the songs in the show, and a coffee pot sticker, again another reference to the show/film as Audrey 2 is grown in a Maxwell Coffee tin.

The building techniques used in this set were technically challenging which were great fun to build and used technik and system bricks to create attachment points for the different leaves and tentacles giving some real life to the build.

The folliage parts used were a great addition and gives the plant an organic look, and building the head section of the plant was challenging enough without being frustrating (it took me a couple of tries to align everything).

The colours used in the set really make it pop on display, I really like the blue coffee tin which helps the light and dark greens pop. The juicy red lips, white sharp teeth and Venom like tongue then give the plant it’s carnivorous look and pays a great homage to the design of Audrey 2 in the film.

The stickers are good quality, however they do cover multiple bricks which is frowned upon by some builders. Of course it would have been nice to have included printed bricks but for $16… yes $16, I understand how they kept the costs down.

The brick quality is pretty good overall with decent brick weight and clutch power. Only the attachments for some of the leaves are a little loose which does sadly cause them to drop off easily if knocked.

Overall, I give the set a solid 8.5 out of 10. If you love Little Shop of Horrors and are looking for a different style botanical set for your collection, then you should 100% pick this one up!
