The latest set to come out of JMBricklayer is themed on one of my favourite subjects, Dinosaurs!

Similar to the Mechanical Chameleon (70124) set my good friend Brickmcbricksworth reviewed last month, the T-Rex is half Dinosaur and half Mechanical. It may seem like an odd pairing but the two halves look great together, especially in display.

The box looks sleek with its black background and blue haze, the T-Rex build is front and centre to grab your attention. Inside you’ll find numbered bags and an instruction manual, which is done extremely well and it easy to follow. Highlighting the new bricks which need to be added whilst greying-out the steps already done.

The building process was enjoyable, 3 bags for each numbered part. Each part connected with ease and if you had made a mistake the pieces weren’t to tough to separate, the T-Rex connects in two places to the base to keep it sturdy and strong. I have tried out builds from other companies and this company by far is the best in terms of builds and quality of bricks.

As I mentioned before the T-Rex itself is different on both sides, one features a finished brick-built style whilst the other side is open and shows off mechanical parts such as gears, cogs and other greebling.

What really grabbed my interest with this set is the finished look of the T-Rex standing proud on his display plinth, which is also brick-built. On the plinth is a boney carcass and a plaque that reads “Robo Dino – Mechanisaurus Mk 1“. I particularly like the natural looking shape the designers have chosen for the plinth, with its sharp, jaggered edges and two-tone colour scheme.

Thankfully there weren’t any noticeable tricky bits that I need to mention and for the most part the build was enjoyable. Coming in at $89.99, this set is sure to please most fans of brick based construction sets – especially if you like Dinosaurs!

Its size is impressive too, measuring a whopping 11.8in tall and 23.6in long. A truly epic display and conversation piece to have proudly sat in your collection.

Not only is the size impressive, you can actually pose the T-Rex in multiple ways thanks to its movable arms and accessories, swooshable tail joint and many other articulation points. Most of which can be seen in the official product video (found below).

Overall the set is good looking and makes for a nice display piece. Being an alternative brand the pieces aren’t quite up to standard as the leading brand, but they’re definitely the best quality I’ve seen of any other brand.

I would happily build another set from JMBricklayer if given the chance. Thank you for letting us review the T-Rex Dinosaur (70001)!
