LEGO has smashed another Guinness World Record for highest altitude launch & retrieval of a LEGO set – Project Hail Mary (11389)!
The marketing team at Sony Pictures UK went above and beyond with the promotion of Project Hail Mary, first sending the IMAX trailer for the film (directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller) to 101,896 feet, marking a first-of-its-kind promotional event. Followed by sending the LEGO Project Hail Mary (11389) set up to an eye-watering 114,790 feet.
The brick-built model of the Hail Mary ship and it’s Minifigures (Ryland Grace and Rocky), were secured to a platform, along side two cameras and a balloon, and released above Gwynedd County in Wales. It took just eight hours to reach a height of 34,988 metres. It was found and safely retrieved after it descended back to Earth, earning the Guinness World Record of highest altitude launch and retrieval of a LEGO set.

If you are unfamiliar with the movies story, it follows science teacher Ryland Grace, who wakes up on a spaceship with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory slowly returns, he soon discovers he must solve the riddle behind a mysterious substance that’s causing the sun to die out. As details of the mission unravel, he calls on his scientific training and sheer ingenuity — but he may not have to do it alone. Catch the movie in cinemas now.
The LEGO set is also still available at LEGO stores and online if you wish you grab yourself a slice of history – coming in at £99.99/$99.99/€109.99, it isn’t too bad, it comes with a Minifigure of Ryan Gosling.
