Hi everyone, Brick McBricksworth here with a review from a company that is new to myself at The Brick Post. Introducing a sculpture build sent to us from Barweer!
The set I had the pleasure of building was the 2,560+ piece Pikachu, or for licensing reasons, electric yellow rat.
This impressively sized model comes in at a very affordable price of just $96.36, to make it even better the price is lower (when writing the review) at $81.91. What’s EVEN better is our 14% discount code THEBRICKPOST works on sale items too, making for an absolute steal. For just over 2,560 pieces, I don’t have to tell you that is amazing on the wallet. Ok the shipping is $47.50 but that still makes it very affordable.
When I say this is an impressive size, what I mean by that is this model is 50cm tall from floor to the top of his ears. It’s around 40cm wide (with the tail) and around 35-40cm deep. It’s Big in fact it’s considered life size! (If Pikachu was real).
When we review a set here at The Brick Post, we go deep into different parts of the build but to be quite honest the actual build itself is quite easy and basic in technique. After all it is a sculpture build so it is going to be on the basic side but this build is meant to be just that.
So does that mean it is boring and repetitive? Nope! It’s one of those builds you can do a bit at a time and just relax with it. You start with a baseplate and build essentially Pikachu’s butt. This is a few bricks deep to give you a solid base. Then from there it is a build where you go around one layer at a time. (Check out mine and TBP instagram account for a speed build/time lapse of this to show what I mean).
I took pictures of this at each hour mark. The whole set took me 7.5 hours. This also included taking photos and to make the timelapse video too. Time just seemed to fly by while I was building and not a second went by where I was thinking when is this finished.
Usually with a set we review, I take a look at the instructions and give a verdict on how well they are presented. I can’t really do this with this set to an extent because of the nature of these builds the credit should go to the original designers of these Mac builds. I take a snip from the Barweer website:
Most of the MOCs use PDF online instruction, a few MOCs supplied by BARWEER use paper instruction, please check the profile description for details. For products that use PDF instruction instruction, please contact us by email with your order number and product model number after you receive the package, and we will send the PDF link ASAP.
* In order to better encourage more interesting creations, BARWEER strongly recommends supporting them by purchasing instruction from the designers.
So this is interesting that with some places they will just provide instructions. But Barweer encourage you to go to the source and support the designer. If you choose to do that or not is up to you.
For the purposes of being given the set to write this review I was provided with instructions and as daunting as they looked they were rather easy to follow.
This set is a more basic style build, mainly bricks with a few plates. There are no stickers or printed pieces it is fully brick built. The bricks Barweer source are from Xingbao (a name I have heard before but never had a set from). The quality of bricks was good overall. A little stiff on clutch power which is not a bad thing on a set you really need grip to last on as there is no Technic elements. I used a little hammer to tap bricks together after a while because when you do several hours of brick building no matter how good the bricks are you need the help. There was however a few of the 2×6 bricks that were warped at the top and this did make it a little difficult in places.
Build quality 7.5/10 (A few warped pieces made it a tad difficult in some parts, but Barweer will replace them free of charge)
Look of the model 10/10!
Instructions N/A (I Can’t score this as I was given instructions the may not come as standard if you choose to support the original designer).
Part selection/colour choice 10/10. Perfect colour representation of the popular Pokémon guy.
Overall a solid 9/10.
I really enjoyed this build as it was different to what I usually build and would love the opportunity to build more like this in the future!
