Hi, Jamie here with another alternative branded review. As a long term Harry Potter fan, when the team at Barweer gave me the opportunity to build and review DK’s Magic Holy Sword, I couldn’t say yes quick enough!
Firstly, lets talk about the great big magical elephant in the room – of course this sword is based on the Sword of Gryffindor. But because of licensing, DK can’t call it that, so they opted with Magic Holy Sword and included Gryffindor branding on their website.
I’ve seen other established companies do exactly this, so to me it’s nothing new. You may be familiar with the company Bricker Builds, they sell instructions and ready to build kits of Pokémon & Mario characters (and more) but licensing means they never refer to them as this. Instead the theme ‘Pokémon’ is ‘Pocket Monsters‘ with characters such as Pikachu sold as ‘Electric Mouse‘. Then Mario & Luigi are the ‘Italian Brothers‘.
This grey area of branding and licensing is still something I dont fully understand, so I’m not one to say who is right and who is wrong, but it’s definitely something worth noting with third party LEGO and brick sets.
Now let’s take a look at today’s build, “The Sword of Godric Gryffindor” aka the Magic Holy Sword.
The design is awesome – I love swords, medieval and fantasy, so to add this to my collection and hang it on the wall is just perfect. I consider myself a Hufflepuff (I know, shocking right?) so to have this iconic Gryffindor symbol in my house does make me question my true Hufflepuffness, so I’m embracing my new loyalty to house Gryffinpuff.
The sword itself measures 85cm long and includes some beautiful detailing on the hilt using silver coloured elements such as claws, wrenches and croissants! The sword is sturdy enough to handle, thanks to some SNOT (studs not on top) building techniques running through the centre of the build, but I wouldn’t go swinging it around and definitely don’t go slaying Basilisks with it.
The display stand measures 95cm long and includes a mounting element allowing for wall display. The base is simple in design and includes some highlight chain detailing at the top.
Sadly the brick quality isn’t the best, they are very light, feel a bit cheap and a few of the longer plates have too much clutch power and require a stronger level of pressure to attach that you don’t see in more established brands. Some of the silver bricks and elements also appeared to be recoloured bricks, as you can see pops of different colours underneath them. However this isn’t noticeable once everything is built and put together.
The final thing to note about this set is how to display it. From what I understand, you have to hang it on the wall. There is no alternative stand, or display ideas included in the instructions. You could for example lay just the sword on its side, but this leaves the display mount redundant which would be a shame as they both compliment eachother very well.
For the grand total of £18 with shipping worldwide, this is an absolute bargain and one you need to add to your collection if you love Harry Potter, Swords and Fantasy weapons. You can even get a further 14% discount using my code JAMIE14.
