We recently stumbled upon a new sub-hobby within the LEGO brick-isphere, fantasy character creation and photography – ok, that’s technically two different hobbies. We have always been fascinated with Minifigures and the unlimited possibilities surrounding them and their appearance. Combine this with the many custom cloaks, capes, sheaths, and scabbards from Minifig Realms and you are onto a winner.
Being an Adult fan of LEGO for some time, I have amassed quite the collection of Minifigure parts, although when it came to constructing fantasy characters I did have to place a cheeky BrickLink order. Scouring LEGO Castle sets, as well as Ninjago and of course the Dungeons & Dragons set, for appropriate parts – such as medieval garb, shields, swords and anything otherworldly – I finally had what it took to start a team of adventure hunters.

Photography has always been a part of what I do here at The Brick Post, be it set documentation for reviews, or for the many hashtags we partake in, we have also dabbled in Minifigure photography. My weapon of choice is my trusty phone, which at times just doesn’t cut it, but it’s definitely a great starting point that does achieve some epic shots. I am by no means an expert, far from it, I am merely a fan of the medium and try my best to capture the characters in their best light.
We have recently got back into MOC building, after seeing some of the awesome creations from the community. In particular focusing on the medieval aesthetic and building a small but detailed world for the characters to inhabit. We went for a one-sided slice of a Castle entrance/alleyway, a simple build but when close-up looks the part and helps create the background for a mini tale or two. Luckily I had the older LEGO 3-in-1 Castle (31120) set in my collection that i dismantled and used, making for an affordable alternative to yet another BrickLink order.

I’ve found the community to be welcoming with one individual in particular being extremely helpful – @fourbrickstall, the founder of Minifig Realms. Their selection of custom cloaks, capes, sheaths, scabbards and more are great and bring the Minifigures wearing them to life. They are hard wearing, professionally cut, and more importantly look the part. Other accounts I follow are TheBrickDwarf for their exceptional photos, and BrickAA for their unique characters. There are of course many others that showcase their work online and all deserve a follow.
When you combine all the above you get one hell of a quest going, one that we can all be a part of. I personally enjoy the character creation side of it all, and sharing them with other like minded people – being a beginner is tough, but stick with it and take onboard constructive criticism to better your photography and yourself. Please check out my first adventure, capturing a selection of my made up heroes and villains in the best way I can.
