The LEGO Ideas Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale (21348) set was released on April 1, 2024, and has proven to be a successful set. Originally designed by Lucas Bolt, it encapsulates the essence of the cooperative tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG), with a ton of details, Minifigures, and playability. As a thank you to the supportive community, Lucas has rebuilt the set into something different, providing a new build and the stage for a new story to tell and adventure to experience.
This alternative build uses pieces from the LEGO Ideas Dungeons & Dragons: A Red Dragon’s Tale set (21348) set. It can be built as a stand-alone set, or if your friend has one they can be combined for a larger landscape. The new model is made of 3311 pieces and really does look the part, the new style of tower is great, the rocky landscape is stunning, and the general aesthetic is very D&D.
Sat atop the tower is an imposing keep, the tan and purple colour scheme works well and gives a striking construct against the light grey walls. Halfway down is a similar style building build into the castle itself, surrounded by doorways and walkways, the new set is like a maze of rooms, perfect for new story elements including close quarter battles.
Other play features include new Monsters to fight or befriend, a giant hermit crab’s shell is part of the cliff and can be taken out of the cave when awoken. The cave has multiple entrances, there is even a prison cell, hidden treasures, stalactites and water source. My imagination is already running wild with stories for this new campaign and the fun to be had with friends.
The 1st floor has a front gate that can be locked and a hall with fireplace and secret hatch. Inside the tower are several rooms to fight through with weapons, spells, and loot to find, stained glass window that can be ‘destroyed’ as a way in or out, there is also a bed-trap-door.
Lucas has produced a downloadable PDF file of the instruction manual, to say thank you and show his appreciation it is completely free of charge. The 463 page file includes superb images that have the ideal aspect ratio for tablets or laptop screens. All steps are carefully setup and checked to match the LEGO quality we all know and love – there truly is no excuse not to give this alternative build and story a go!
