Hi folks, Stuart from @mcbricksbricks here, with a review on the latest LumiBricks offering. The Steampunk Memory Magic Shop (11013)

My thanks firstly to LumiBricks for sending this set over for me to review for The Brick Post, it’s truly appreciated. In fact, you can support them by using their affiliate links found at the end of the review, you’ll bag 10% off your LumiBricks purchases.

This new product from LumiBricks (formerly FunWhole) is an expansion of the SteamPunk theme. This is my second set to review in this series and if they continue like this one, and the previous Time Rift Library, it will be another pleasure to review.

We start the review with the instructions, who’ve are great in the usual LumiBricks way. They have handy tips, including how long the tiles are and size of bricks listed in the key. I still think this is a nice touch and works well in the instructions. But in this one when it came to the dark brown pieces it was very difficult to see which piece was needed. For instance there was one part where I had a 1×2 Brick and a 1×2 Masonry Brick in the same bag and couldn’t tell which piece I needed without shining a torch on the instruction manual. Aside from that I still rate LumiBricks instructions very highly.

Just recently LumiBricks have seemingly upgraded their lights somewhat. In past sets they were mainly warm white or cool white for the most part with a few minor colour variations depending on the placement etc. But in this set they have more colour range and pulsating lights which work really well where they are placed. One of the pulse lights is near an electrode of sorts making it work really well as part of the play feature and display appeal.

This set begins with the foundations and there is a lot of initial tile work here. Given this is another modular build similar to the Library it has much of the same quick building in the making progress department.

For the first few bags you are building the front part of the Memory Magic Shop. In this part there are already some very nice printed pieces and clever building techniques. Something I personally haven’t seen much in LumiBricks sets also in this build there is a fair amount of gear pieces.
I have mainly built sets from the Wild West theme in regards to LumiBricks, where no gears are included at all, so this was a real treat

Once the front of the build is more or less done, you move onto the back and side parts, which are very clever in themselves – they can be displayed separately to the main set. This consists of the sidewall of the building and the back which mostly concentrates on interior detail. It even goes to the extent of being wired up so it can have a stand alone power to have the lights on even without the main front. This itself is a corking idea incorporating a play-set within the main play-set! This is actually my favourite part of this set and it is something I haven’t seen done before in this way so very well done to the Lumi Bricks design team! (Pictures included in the review of the stand alone parts.)

The figures are nice and work well with the set. Just like with the Time Rift Library, they work really well in the Steampunk theme.

The whole build process on this set was just a joy to put together. It had barely any repetition and seemed to flow really well. These Steampunk sets seem to have a quite unique build feel about them and I am glad I am given the chance to write about the sets from this theme!

The parts choice and colour combinations work really well again for the theme and look brilliant next to previous Steampunk builds.

Now for the scores:

  • Figures 9.5 out of 10
  • Instructions 7 out of 10
  • Playability 10 out of 10
  • Display appeal 10 out of 10
  • Build experience is a 10 out of 10

I give this one a 9 out of 10 as a whole experience. This could have been another perfect set if not for the difficulty with the instructions. The build though was top notch. I really hope you have enjoyed this review, please be sure to check this one out it really was a stupendous set to build.
