LumiBricks has gone where others dare not, to a UFO themed diner, in their latest set dubbed the Interstellar Drive-in!

We were given the opportunity by LumiBricks to build and review this very unique but absolutely stunning set. It features 13 illuminated zones, including two light strips, a retro-futuristic sci-fi aesthetic, complete with a striking flying saucer as the main focal point. It comes just in time for LumiBricks upcoming Black Friday event where you’ll be able to save big on this set and others.

The Box & Contents:

Inside the bright and, as always, premium looking and feeling packaging, you’ll find a ton of numbered bags, 2 chunky instruction manuals, a bag of plates, and of course the orange light kit box. Inside that are the cables and LEDs that eventually bring the set to life, and o’boy it sure does.

The Build:

When it comes to the build and the many stages from start to finish, it’s a joy to make and see come together. The first couple of bags are the vehicle and carport/parking area, it’s a simple build but it adds so much to the overall set once done. The vehicle is a stylistic take on a Pink Cadillac with its long chassis and tail fins. The amazing thing about this is the separate light kit and isn’t connected or powered by the main unit, that’s right it has its own power supply, making it a cool addition that can be played with away from the main set.

The carport isade up of a flat base about 10 studs wide and tiled for smoothness. It has a small rubbish bin and a tall Palm Tree attached to it. It will eventually sit next to the Diner to add parking for customers.

Moving onto the main build, the Interstellar Drive-in itself. The base is the first thing you do, which happens to have a hinge on it so you can open and close the building enabling access to the insides. The chequered flooring is perfect and takes. Inspiration from traditional American Diners, here though the white tiles are somewhat clear but have an awesome pearlescent look to them, they sparkle in the right light.

Once the base it done you start to add most of the interior details such as furniture, kitchen area and entertainment, the matching pearlescent Jukebox is amazing. Other it’s inside are the red diner seats, a leatlet rack, tables, cupboards, food and drinks, a serving counter and so much more – my favourite is the big printed space scene tile (seen below).

As you can see the Diner is round, the LumiBricks designers took inspiration from Mel’s Diner in the US, which was a famous diner from yesteryear. Recreating the shape, sort of, in bricks is both satisfying yet fiddly when building it. Using hinges you attache sections as you build, having the different sections swaying and coming unattached with the slightest movements is annoying, until you attach the hinges at the top which secures them on place. A small grumble in a gorgeous set, one I had to mention as we like to be honest here at The Brick Post.

The roof is circular too, obviously, and although a repetitive few stages a necessary one. Using tiles, plates and clips you slowly build are each section before attaching them to each other, creating the full circle. Below you’ll see the start of the UFO placed on the roof, as the light cable is attached here ready for the UFO to be mounted and finished.

The UFO itself is a great little build, similar to the roof it’s circular in shape and resembles a traditional UFO that we all know from old movies and TV shows. Tiled to create a smooth finish, the build is fun and one I’ll definitely use in MOCs and in my City. The long LED strips work so well here and light up the craft and building below it extremely well, add in the lights are blue and you have a winning combination.

Perhaps the best part of the UFO in the big clear, and scratchless, domed canopy piece, it’s perfect. There’s even room to pop a figure inside, sadly LumiBricks don’t include an Alien in the set, which is a little disappointing to be honest – how cool would an exclusive LumiBricks Alien figure be!

The Figures:

Four Minifigures are included, but there are only really three we need to mention and talk about, the staff members. Their uniform reminds me of a certain TV show set in space (Star Trek), with their blue, yellow and red tops and small UFO logos – I don’t think it’s a coincidence that LumiBricks have done this when LEGO are launching their Star Trek set soon.

With all LumiBricks figures, you’ll need to build them from scratch. Hands into arms, arms into bodies, legs onto waist and waist into torso, and so on. It can be fiddly at times but we’ve grown to accept this and just get it done at the start of the whole set, get the painful part over and done with.

The Lights:

The icing on the brick cake, the lights, in all their bright and colourful glory. As we’ve said many times before in past LumiBricks reviews, the lights are the main pull of the set, especially when displaying them. The themes and builds are awesome on their own, but add lights and… Wow!

The strips underneath the UFO are super bright and beam the colours onto the background to fully illuminate itself and the surroundings, it’s truly a sight to behold.

The lights are installed as you build, making for a unique experience. Using the LumiBricks specialist bricks that hide and protect the cables, you seriously can’t go wrong. If you do have a hiccup along the way then customer service is there to help, we’ve used the before and they are both fast and reliable, supplying replacement parts.
