Pantasy is a brand that creates unique, fun, and engaging brick sets, one in particular was top of my list to build and thanks to them reaching out I finally had the chance to – introducing Sherlock Holmes Baker Street 221B Apartment!

Having had my eye on this set for awhile, it was music to my ears when Pantasy agreed to send me a review copy of the updated set with their new figures. Not only did it look like a cracking build, it would also be added to my City (Gregsville) on a permanent basis, every City needs a detective, doesn’t it?

The Box & Contents:

The box is bright and full of artwork, with the set front & centre and the background comprising of a faint Victorian-style street scene. Also on the front is the Pantasy logo and a stamp of approval from The Conan Doyle Estate, as this is a fully licensed set. You’ll also find the set number and name, sadly Pantasy don’t list the part count, but thanks to other sources we know it’s 3,087.

Inside the box are 17 numbered bags, 2 instruction booklets, baseplates and a separate bags for the figures and window panes. It’s a little overwhelming at first glance, having so many pieces staring you in the face, but as always once you get going and work bag-by-bag, you soon get into the swing of it.

The Build:

Cracking the box and bags open and grabbing a handful of big plates, you make a start on the modular building. As always starting with tiling the floor and laying the foundations for what’s to come. I will say straight off the bat, the build is very ‘old skool‘, in the sense that it’s good old fashioned brick-on-brick action.

The baseplate is made up of several larger plates held together by the first layer of tiles and brinks that you lay in bag 1. Being the ground floor cafe, the floor is a nice chequered pattern then you see in most older cafes. The real joy in the ground floor is the brick-built coffee machine, it looks just like one you’d find in a real-life cafe. The 1×1 cones and cylinders represent the takeaway coffee cups, it’s just a perfect little build.

More was placed in the first few bags like the walls, stairs an, doors and windows. We like to take photos of each bag and what is built as it gives a better picture of how the set comes to be.

The next handful of bags make up the first floor which is Sherlock Holmes‘ living quarters, complete with Union Jack cushions. There is also a larger grey sofa along with a chess board and a tea set, an afternoon game anyone? Head through intobthe back room and you’ll find a Lab of sorts, with a microscope, test tubes & bottles and a fridge to store it all. These are fun little side builds that add a lot to the set, my favourites are the printed Union Jack cushions, these will definitely come in handy not just in the set but also MOCs and scenes.

A more of the walls are built here too, layering up the bricks and creating an even sturdier structure. Being a slightly smaller form factor than other Modulars it’s makes for a nice inclusion into any fans Cityscape. Instead of sitting on a 32×32 baseplate, the size is a tad smaller coming in at 24×32, a nice size to slot into a space that a standard modular wouldn’t.

The windows look great with white trim and the addition of the autumn colours is spectacular. Pantasy really know how to create a vibe and scene.

Moving into the next floor which is Holmes’ sleeping quarters. It’s a little bare compared to the previous floors but it still has some interesting builds and techniques. There is another armchair, an investigation board (pictured above), a bureau, a bed and a spare bedroom complete with wardrobe. I particularly like the many printed tiles on the wall, depicting hand drawn scenes. There are stickers in the set but they are kept to a minimum, one however is the Sherlock Holmes sign along the front of the cafe canopy, which spans a handful of tiles, which is a big no no for me, it’s saved slightly in the fact it’s a transfer.

The walls are once again built up and retain the layout from the previous floor, as the stairs from the ground floor run up to this one, keeping the whole look and feel the same. The only thing lift to add to the building is the roof.

It’s a simple build to finish off the set but it adds so much, the icing on the cake, the cherry so to speak. Made up of mostly dark grey pieces with a handful of dark tan for the upper windows. I particularly like the curved front that leads into a lower roof area, sadly there isn’t much to see apart from a long skylight that brightens up Sherlock‘s living space.

Overall the Pantasy Sherlock Holmes Baker Street 221B Apartment set is an enjoyable build, filled with interesting sidebuilds and a freshing step back in time to basic but totally awesome brick-on-brick construction.

The Figures:

That’s not all though, the set offers more in the form of 5 unique figures and a brick-built horse-drawn carriage. Starting with the chosen mode of transportation back then, the horse is a nice printed piece that attaches to the horse-drawn carriage. Being all black pieces, it looks great, especially parked up outside the Sherlock’s home, drop some extra leaves on the road and you have the making of a very autumnal scene.

The 5 figures include Sherlock Holmes, Watson and other key characters to enrich the set and the stories within. Each have their own personality and fashion style, Sherlock has his iconic deer-hunter hat, Watson with his bowler hat and so on. I must say I don’t particulary like the style of Pantasy figures but they do grow on me everytime I see them, their printing is spot on and the larger head make them appealing to younger fans who also like Funko Pops and other similar toys.

As modular buildings go it was a pleasure to build and yes, it’ll be going iny City, Gregsville, at some point. For now I temporarily placed it next to the Pantasy Bakery. I’d like to thank Pantasy immensely for supplying the set free of charge, I really do appreciate it, thank you.
