Star Wars UCS sets tend to be based around the original trilogy with only a handful of sets based off the prequels. Thankfully in recent years LEGO have been releasing more prequel sets, the last was the Venator back in October 2023.
Having missed out on the Slave 1 UCS set, I didn’t want to miss out on this one. The ship features in Attack of the Clones in an awesome action scene when Jango and Obi-Wan battle it out in the asteroid belt around Geonosis. One of the best sounds you’ll hear in Star Wars is a seismic charge detonating.
Build:
The 2015 UCS Slave 1 had 1,996 pieces, Jango Fett’s has nearly 1,000 more pieces. There are a small number of stickers including some larger ones. Considering the price and this being a UCS set, all of the stickers should be printed pieces.
The build is split over 23 bags, the canopy piece for the from comes in its own little bag to prevent it being scratched, it should also be noted that the canopy piece is a newly designed element for this set.
I absolutely loved the build from start to finish. The first few bags build the technic base and from there you build on it. Often you’ll be building sections separately to then attach the main build. I found the curves to the shop really well built and clever so that there are no gaps to them and it all looks well rounded.
There are a couple of play features, firstly there is a mechanism to lift and raise the ramp. The dual laser canons move together and look great at the front.
The cockpit section is full removable. The back section can be removed to store Jango’s jetpack and guns so you can easily put him in the pilots seat to fly the ship. There is a small reference of a bacta tank.
The back has a compartment for a seismic charge. Unfortunately there is no feature to open and close it and you have to manually move the pieces. I did watch a review on this where the designers said they tried to incorporate a play feature but it didn’t work out. The seismic charge looks the part but annoyingly has five stickers, which aren’t the easiest to apply as they go on curved pieces.
Minifigures:
We get two minifigures, Jango and Boba Fett and to be honest that’s all we need with this set. Jango Fett looks excellent and there’s a new Rangefinder piece. This is the first time we’ve seen Jango since the 2017 Jedi Starfighter with Hyperdrive set. It’s also the first time we’ve had arm printing on him as well. The helmet design has been updated and looks more screen accurate. One slight issue is that Jango’s jet pack should be a lighter silver and match the helmet. I also think that the legs should be dual moulded as there is a UCS set.
Jango has a double sided head and hair piece so you can display him without his helmet.
Young Boba looks ok but should really have a different hair piece to match his hair in the movies.
Price:
The set is £259.99 which I thought was fair for a UCS set, particularly when you compare it to other sets. As this was coming out on May 4th there was a stack of GWPs and Insiders Rewards that were available and made it worthwhile getting straight away. The one annoying thing is that unlike in previous years where double GWP were available on all sets, this year LEGO limited the sets that were eligible for double points. As a result, this set wasn’t eligible for double points on the May 4th event.
Display:
Once built the set looks amazing and the colours and design makes it stand out against some of the other UCS sets which are normally shades of grey or white and white. The colour combination works really well together.
The cockpit section is full removable. The back section can be removed to store Jango’s jetpack and guns so you can easily put him in the pilots seat to fly the ship.
Interestingly for a UCS set, there is no display stand for the Minifigures, so they have to be displayed within the set. The information plaque is printed and it’s great LEGO have done away with stickers for the plaque for a while now.
Final Thoughts:
Having built a few UCS sets this is one of my favourites. Probably the only negatives I have are the Boba Fett Minifigure and the use of stickers for the larger pieces. Considering that Pantasy and Lumibricks all use printed pieces in their sets, LEGO should be doing a lot better.
Overall this is a brilliant UCS set and one I am pleased to have in my collection.
Score:
- Build – 9.0
- Price – 9.0
- Minifigures – 9.0
- Display – 10
- Total – 9.0
