When it comes to modular buildings, LumiBricks are hitting them out the park, with multiple offerings each year putting the big named brand to shame. My City doesn’t know what has hit it this past 12 plus months, with the stunning Art Gallery, magnificent Record Store, thrilling Theatre, to name a few. The latest in the line is the Boxing Club (19009), a set chock-full of details, new locations, and of course lights!

Inside the box you’ll find the usual contents, 2 chunky instruction manuals, 19 numbered bags, a separate bag full of plates and window panes, and the bright orange light kit box filled with cables and the tools need to fit them. When I first opened the box and saw the amount of bags and the very thick booklets, I panicked and thought it would take an age to build. With 3,036 pieces, it’s a beast of a set.

The first handful of bags make the ground floor, starting off with the extremely satisfying tiling. The left hand side is actually quite narrow, with a staircase and shelter running down the right hand side. The ground floor is a Laundromat, and a mighty fine one too, with several machines ready to tackle the gym gear thrown at it after a good workout session upstairs.

The outside shelter, or Bus Stop, is small but packed with printed tiles, big and small. The strip light is also a nice touch and really brightens the outdoors area. More in the printed elements later in the review.

The first string of lights are laid here too, using the exclusive LumiBricks patented bricks that hide and protect the cables. They make the whole process enjoyable and a breeze to install, they have really revolutionised the light kit industry.

The first floor is the Boxing Club itself, with features a cool Boxing ring that actually moves. Pop the included figures into the ring, turn the knob, and watch them Box. It’s a relatively simple mechanism but the results are fun, with each Boxer seemingly taking turns. Better still is the fact it’s an entirely removable section, it slids into the main build thanks to the grooves on the side. Flaps on all floors allow the Boxing Ring to be removed with ease, the flaps also house more prints and some cool details, such as a belt, trophy and posters of Boxing legends.

The second floor is also special, it’s the first gym space LumiBricks have made, this too can be slid out for easier access and scene setup. Inside the gym itself you’ll find the typical equipment, benchpress, bicycles, weights, and punchbags. The way the punchbags hang is great, although I did modify then ever so slightly, in the manual it tells you to connect the tip arm to hanging bag, but ease these off a little and the bags actually now hang snd swing, perfect.

Again there is another access flap, this one however has a ladder attached to it along with half of the bench press, which folds down for use. These also allow the light to shine bright once opened, you can really see how bright the lights are even it daylight.

The final 3rd floor, is smaller that the previous ones, it’s more of a filler I feel but a nice addition as makes the whole thing taller when up against modulars. Inside you’ll find spare weights, boxes, and other storage-style things, as that with this floor is, a maintenance room of sorts. Figures can still access the space but I’d say it’s less accessed as it darker and dingiyer.

On the balcony is a large container, goodness knows what it is but it looks cool, maybe an air conditioning unit. Other floors also have a balcony with different items on it, one has some shorts drying on the railings, the one above has a smaller air conditioning unit on it.

Each floor can be lifted in true modular style, thanks to the connectors on each floor you don’t need to remove cables, the wireless connection points are amazing and really allow the set to be opened up, literally.

Overall the set is fantastic and a City builders dream. It is a joy to build and display, both with lights on and off. It features many details, prints, slide-out bits, flaps, lights and more, it even looks good on so many levels.
