LEGO Ideas Feature: Lunch Atop a Skyscraper By P.D.G

This week’s LEGO Ideas Feature is brought to you by P.D.G and their awesome recreation of an iconic photograph, ‘Lunch Atop A Skyscraper‘!

The black-and-white photograph taken in 1932, of eleven ironworkers sitting on a steel beam of the RCA Building, 850 feet (260m) above the ground during the construction of Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, New York City. It was a staged photograph arranged as a publicity stunt, part of a campaign promoting the skyscraper. – Wikipedia

A lot of effort has been made to describe the photo, called ‘A Piece of American History,’ as a Lego set. It was never easy to express photos in LEGO. – P.D.G

The idea is perfect for recreating with LEGO bricks, deciding to make it 3D, similar to the LEGO Icons Vincent Van Gogh Sunflower set is a great choice. The black frame and contrasting buildings, the girder and Minifigure workers, all come together to make this LEGO Ideas submission not only a work of art to look at but hopefully an amazing set to build and display. Being a Minifigure collector these really speak toe and would make fine additions to anyone’s collection.

Inspired by the workers from the original iconic photograph, they each have their characteristics and fashion choices, from dungarees and flat caps to work shirts and hair styles. It’s a nice mix of people that look amazing sat on the 3D girder eating their well deserved lunches.

I dedicate this Lego set to all the workers.

Essentially this is an ART set, or in my eyes would be classed as one, sitting alongside the aforementioned Sunflowers sets, and also the Mona Lisa, Dancing Figures and others from the range. I have yet to pickup an ART set myself but it this one was chosen to become an official LEGO Ideas set, I’d snap it up day one – it may even persuade me to expand the ART collection and buy others.

The set overall is great fun and one I’d purchase if given the chance. Come on LEGO, this needs to be produced! We would like to wish P.D.G the best of luck in promoting and gaining the required 10k supporters needed to get this product idea to the next stage.
