We spoke to Varun Khullar about his new product Brick Bagz, and the Kickstarter campaign behind it. From what started as frustration and a need to store & tidy LEGO bricks, came a sustainable and attractive product. As a family backed enterprise, the Brick Bagz have proven popular with the target audience, brick builders and hobbyists alike, with the Kickstarter campaign already 54% backed (as of this post).
Below we find out how the idea came about, the importance of sustainability and perhaps the most hard hitting question of all, what is your favourite LEGO set?

TBP: When did LEGO enter your life?
Varun: I started playing with LEGO at a very young age. My first experience came when I inherited a set of bricks from my uncle, stored in a classic blue vintage tray. From that moment on, I was completely hooked.
TBP: What was your first LEGO set?
Varun: This takes me back to the 1990s, when LEGO airport sets were all the rage. I distinctly remember owning one of those, along with the Royal King’s Castle. Those sets sparked a lifelong love for building.
TBP: It’s a staple in any interview to ask: what is your favourite LEGO set?
Varun: Right now, my favourite sets are anything Marvel-related. I’m a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I even do pretty well in MCU quizzes! More recently, I’ve been building a lot with my older son, who’s a massive Ninjago fan. We’ve collected most of the dragons, mechs and minifigures, and we even play the Ninjago game together on our Switch 2.

TBP: How did the initial Brick Bagz idea come about?
Varun: It actually came out of frustration. We were constantly digging through our LEGO bin, trying to find specific pieces for our youngest, who had just reached the age to start building. I looked online for a better, eco-friendly way to store LEGO bricks, but nothing really fit the bill. Sure, Ziploc bags or cheap plastic options from places like Temu are available, but they’re not built to last—and definitely not environmentally conscious. I wanted something more premium, durable, and sustainable.
TBP: There are four sizes and colours available. Was that always the plan, or did it evolve?
Varun: The sizing was driven by the instruction booklets that come with most LEGO sets. We found that most sets fall into four main size categories. The fifth—like the Millennium Falcon—is simply too large for a standard bag. So the four sizes made sense from both a functionality and usability perspective. As for colours, we went with bold, primary colours that are easily recognisable and align well with our brand. That said, we’re already working on expanding the range to cater to different tastes. In fact, if we hit our Kickstarter stretch goals, we’ll be adding more colour options to our lineup.

TBP: How important was sustainability in your design process?
Varun: It was absolutely central. Without that focus, we probably would have just stuck with Ziploc bags but we wanted to do more. Every step of our development, materials, packaging, and beyond, is assessed for environmental impact. We’re committed to building a brand that not only serves LEGO fans but also respects the planet. We’re even exploring B Corp certification, depending on how our launch progresses.
TBP: How difficult was it to source a manufacturer for the prototype and final product?
Varun: It took time and a lot of research. There are plenty of vendors out there, but we were very specific in wanting a partner who aligned with our values around sustainability and ethical manufacturing. Once we found the right fit, we went through several design iterations before finalising the prototype. Even now, we continue to improve, recently, we added mini-figure slots based on community feedback, which are now part of our Kickstarter offering.

TBP: Kickstarter is a great platform. Do you plan to offer Brick Bagz elsewhere in the future?
Varun: Yes, absolutely. If the Kickstarter campaign is successful, we’ll immediately open up pre-orders through our own online platform. Those who order there will receive their products at the same time as our backers, though Kickstarter supporters will benefit from exclusive discounts. Long-term, we aim to partner with independent stores and large retailers. We’re also in talks with potential licensing partners to create themed bag options, imagine a Mario-branded red-zip bag or a Frozen-themed version with a frosty blue zip.
TBP: Will there be more Kickstarter tiers once the initial target is hit?
Varun: Currently, we have four core tiers, each offering different combinations to suit various needs. Customers can also freely add-on as many extra items as they like, there are no limitations. We’re keeping things flexible and scalable based on community demand.
TBP: Do you have any final thoughts to share with our readers?
Varun: We’d love your support whether that’s by pledging on Kickstarter or simply giving us a follow or like on Instagram. We’re always open to feedback, both positive and constructive, because our goal is to build the best product for the LEGO community.
