The LEGO Ideas Floating Sea Otters (21366) was unveiled yesterday, but many fans prefer the fan design, do you agree?
HisBrickMaterials designed and submitted the build on the LEGO Ideas, where it grew in popularity and eventually gained the required 10,000 supporters. Making its way into the review stage and being chosen March 2025, almost a year ago. The original design won the hearts of many fans for its cartoon-like but cute appearance. Whilst LEGO has stayed true to the original, there are differences, some more obvious that others.

As mentioned before the original design leans more towards an almost caricature take on an Otter, big eyes, open smiling mouth and larger clumps of wet fur. LEGO however take a more realistic approach, with eyes that match the scale, a pointier nose, and a sleek wet look. Perhaps the fan designer took inspiration from a River Otter more than a Sea Otter, which do have larger eyes and a rounded nose compared to a slender Sea oriented one.
Other differences are more cosmetic, with the water and surrounding fauna varying slightly. There is still a tiny rock formation covered in leaves/seaweed, although in a different position, other vegetation is dotted around the edge just like the original too. The plinth on which it all sits is different too, LEGO have gone for a more natural and fluid look, with water going upto the edge and almost hanging off.

With those differences highlighted, which aren’t many in the grand scheme of things, which one do you prefer most? Fan design or final LEGO product? Let us know in the comments below.
